Spring Grove entered the 2013 postseason without a single state playoff victory in its illustrious wrestling history.
Well, now the Rockets have two PIAA victories to their credit.
Spring Grove rolled to a 33-11 triumph over Downingtown East on Friday morning in a Class AAA consolation match at Hershey's Giant Center. The victory keeps Spring Grove in the running for a possible AAA bronze medal.
The Rockets, the third-place team from District 3, got their first-ever state victory with a 37-24 home triumph over Boyertown, the third-place team from District 1, on Monday. They followed that with a 42-22 loss to Canon-McMillan on Thursday night at Hershey's Giant Center. Canon McMillan is the District 7 champion and the defending state champion.
That loss knocked Spring Grove into the consolation bracket, where it dismantled District 1 runner-up Downingtown East Friday morning. The Rockets' win on Friday was unusual _ it did not feature a single pin or technical fall.
Spring Grove got three major decisions from Michael Hartman (138), Mason Bentzel (145) and Austin Barley (160). The Rockets' other victories came from Levi Witmer (106), Zack Clingan (120), Alec Zorbaugh (126), Dakota Laughman (132), Tyler Miller (152), Jonathan Gross (170) and Andy Melhorn (182).
Spring Grove will have a second-round consolation bout at 6 p.m. Friday against an opponent to be determined.
