Three York County players earned berths on the 2012 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AAA All-State Football Team on Thursday.
West York's Brody Kern and Zack Smith and Eastern York's Alex Cooley were selected. All three are seniors.
Kern (6-2, 275) made the team as an offensive lineman, Smith (6-1, 171) was selected at wide receiver and Cooley (5-7, 180) was picked at running back.
This fall, Kern and Smith helped West York to a 13-1 record, a York-Adams Division II championship and a berth in the District 3-AAA title game.
Kern has played on the varsity since he was a freshman and plans to compete in football next fall for Delaware, a Football Championship Subdivision School. During his four years on the varsity, West York compiled a 42-9 record, including at least a share of four straight Division II crowns. This year, Kern started at center and paved the way for an offense that scored 34.1 points per game while rushing for 223.4 yards per game and passing for 121.3 yards per game. Defensively, he had 33 tackles, including two sacks.
Smith was the leading receiver in the York-Adams League, with 64 catches for 1,129 yards, an average of 17.6 yards per catch. He scored 15 touchdowns. He was also a standout defensively, with 37 tackles and four interceptions.
Cooley, meanwhile, finished as the leading rusher in York-Adams League history and he set a single-season league record this year with 2,845 yards, an average of 284.5 yards per game. He also averaged 11.4 yards per carry and scored 32 touchdowns. For his career, he had 6,015 rushing yards and 80 touchdowns. He also set PIAA and District 3 records for rushing yards in a game with 500 against Hanover. He ended his career with a 492-yard, 10-touchdown performance against York Tech.
The Class AAAA and Class AAA all-state teams were released Thursday. The small-school all-state teams were released Wednesday.
Ortega honored: In addition to the three York County players, a former York County coach was also honored Thursday when ex-York High boss Matt Ortega was named the Class AAAA Coach of the Year.
Ortega led Coatesville to the PIAA Class AAAA championship game, where the Raiders fell to North Allegheny, 63-28. It was the first time Coatesville had reached the state finals in football.
Coatesville finished the season at 13-3, including its first District 1 title since 1992. After starting the season at 2-2, Coatesville had an 11-game winning streak until losing to North Allegheny in the state championship contest.
Ortega led the York High football program from 2004 through 2008, compiling a 37-18 record, including 10-2 marks in his final two seasons.
The selection of the all-state teams are overseen by sports writers who cover high school football around the commonwealth. Players were nominated in all four classifications, and then a statewide ballot was released affording all writers an opportunity to cast votes.
Players of year: Days removed from leading their respective programs to state championships, dual-threat quarterbacks Mack Leftwich and Damion Terry have won honors for standout senior seasons.
Leftwich, North Allegheny's engaging signal-caller, was tabbed Class AAAA Player of the Year. Terry won top player honors at Class AAA after helping Erie Cathedral Prep take home a title last week in Hershey.
Now a two-time selection, Leftwich polished off a brilliant season with three touchdowns Saturday when the Tigers downed Coatesville at Hersheypark Stadium.
Boasting a 30-1 career record as a starter, Leftwich threw for more than 3,330 yards this season with 45 touchdown passes and just four interceptions, steering Art Walker's Tigers to their third straight WPIAL title and second state title in three seasons. The Texas-El Paso recruit was 16-of-20 passing for 199 yards in Hershey.
Terry last week rallied the District 10 Ramblers to their second PIAA crown. Exceeding all expectations -- and there were plenty -- the 6-4, 220-pound Michigan State recruit rewrote both school and District 10 record books during Prep's 15-0 campaign.
Terry added a Class AAA championship-best 317 passing yards last Friday as the nationally-ranked Ramblers tripped defending champ Archbishop Wood 24-14.
Among the nation's top prospects at his position, Terry finished the season with 3,599 passing yards and 50 touchdowns, two shy of the state's all-time single-season mark. Prep teammates John Chereson, Erik Swanson, Jake Plonski and Delton Williams joined Terry as all-state selections.
Even Ramblers coach Mike Mischler entered the mix, banking Class AAA Coach of the Year honors. Kicker Chereson and defensive back Williams joined the Bishop McDevitt tandem of Alec Werner and Brian Lemelle, Central Valley's Robert Foster and Devin Wilson of Montour as repeat selections in Class AAA.
Counting Leftwich, six players from North Allegheny earned spots among the top 34 at the Class AAAA level. The list includes Gregg Garrity, Zach Lyon, Michigan recruit Patrick Kugler, Jeremy Gonzales and Brendan Coniker.
Kugler, Coniker and Penn State commit Zayd Issah of Central Dauphin all repeated in Class AAAA.
