If you're a mom, it might be a little hard to picture having an entire day to yourself.

But Creative Escape Day, to be held this Saturday, aims to give busy Yorkers the space and time to do so.

The event, hosted by the MOMS Club of York, welcomes crafters, knitters, scrapbookers and other project-makers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the YMCA's Eastern branch, 77 Shoe House Road in Hellam Township.

Cost is $30, or $40 if you require electricity, and all proceeds will go to the Children's Home of York.

How it works: Each participant gets a 6-foot table for personal space to do whatever kind of project the person wants, said Katie Mahoney, assistant director of development at Children's Home of York.

The MOMS Club came up with the event — the first "special retreat day" of its kind — to cater to busy moms who want the time and space to scrapbook, do crafts or simply have a day to themselves, she said.

"Use the day for whatever kind of escape you need it to be," Mahoney said.

Food will be available for purchase at the event, and there will be raffle prizes, drawings and goodie bags for all participants.

"We just wanted to try and welcome as many women as possible to forget about everything they're doing and have a wonderful time," said Robin Spinner, administrative vice president of the MOMS Club.

For the kids: The club chooses a local charity to give back to each year, she said. After seeing the the wide reach of Children's Home programs last year, members were inspired to sponsor the organization again this year, Spinner said.

"We are huge fans of the Children's Home," she said.

Proceeds from Saturday's event will bolster Children's Home youth and family programs.

"We feel incredibly grateful," Mahoney said. "The MOMS Club has really stepped up to become our donors."

If it weren't for organizations like that, the Children's Home wouldn't be able to keep its programs going, she said.

"We're excited for it. I think it's a really unique idea, and I think it applies to a wide variety of people," Mahoney said.

Not including MOMS Club members, around 22 people have signed up -- some from as far as an hour away -- and spots are still available, Spinner said.

"I'm hoping this won't be the only time we do this," she said. "I'd like to see it continue -- it'll grow a little bit each time."
