The Mexican music, colorful banners and sombreros on the wall quickly hint at the type of food being served.
"But this isn't Americanized Mexican. This is real Mexican," said Omar Farook.
Farook is the owner and manager of El Maya, the new and only Mexican buffet in York County.
The restaurant opened Thursday at 931 Loucks Road in a York City shopping plaza anchored by Staples and Tractor Supply Co.
This week it will launch its delivery service, which is designed to cater a to growing Hispanic population in York, Farook said.
"There's a new generation here, a growing culture that wants more seasoned and spicy foods," he said.
Farook, a Springettsbury Township resident, also owns seven MoMo's Pizza & Wing stores throughout the region. He has previously operated a Mexican restaurant in Virginia and is planning an Indian restaurant in York.
Delivery too: His most recent venture includes a 42-item lunch buffet for $7.99, a 75-item dinner buffet for $12.99 and a delivery service that will have meals at various prices.
Menu items include enchiladas, soft tacos, burritos, three-meal cake, passion fruits and more.
"You'll notice a lot of soft-shelled items. That's real Mexican. I wanted to keep it authentic to give people something completely different," Farook said.
El Maya seats 325 people and employs 14 workers.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
A grand opening will be held Wednesday, May 15 and include live music from a mariachi band.
