York City Police are urging people to beware a phone scam in which callers claim to be from local utility companies.

Police said they've received several complaints in the past few weeks from residents and businesses about the scam.

Callers tell intended victims their utility service will be shut off immediately unless payment arrangements are made, according to police, who said those arrangements consist of callers obtaining victims' Social Security numbers, dates of birth and other personal information.

Don't give such information over the phone, and call your utility company immediately if you get such a call, police said.
