Shoppers looking for discounts on electronics and appliances might not have to wait for Black Friday sales.

Starting Sunday, Boscov's will be offering discounts up to 30 percent, hoping to clear out its inventory by the end of the fiscal quarter in January.

The Reading-based chain, which operates a department store in the York Galleria, will no longer sell electronics and appliances, said Jim Boscov, vice chairman of the company.

To get rid of that merchandise, Boscov's will be offering "once-in-a-lifetime deals" throughout the holiday season, he said.

"Demand for appliances and electronics isn't growing," he said.

Sales were strong three years ago when consumers upgraded their TVs as cable companies talked about upgrading from analog to digital services, Boscov said.

"Since then, sales on electronics and appliances have gone down, and furniture sales have grown dramatically," he said.

Eliminating the sale of electronics and appliances did come with some hesitation, but the company is listening to its customers, he said.

"The message we're getting from customers is they want more furniture," Boscov said. To accommodate those buyers, Boscov's will expand its home furnishings line to include bedroom furniture and casual dining sets.

The department store will also sell oriental rugs and has forged a partnership to have Bombay Company shops in each store.

How soon changes will be implemented at the Springettsbury Township store is uncertain, Boscov said.

"We're working on the details now because there will have to be physical work in some of the stores," he said. "Empty space doesn't do anybody any good, so we're looking to transition as soon as possible."

As part of the transition, workers in the electronics and appliances department will be absorbed into other areas of the store, Boscov said.

Though the store is adding deeper inventory in the home furnishings line, and cutting electronics and appliances, it will continue to operate an appliance service department. In addition to servicing items purchased at Boscov's, it also performs service for other retailers, he said.

"Our Appliances Unlimited service is a very good part of our business, and we will continue to offer that," Boscov said.
