Medicare questions are bound to come up in a county with 72,000 Medicare beneficiaries.
So to answer those questions, the York County Area Agency on Aging's APPRISE Program will offer personalized counseling sessions during Medicare's annual enrollment period, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.
During that period, people with Medicare can review their coverage and determine if their current health and prescription plans are best meeting their needs, said Jenny Nace, information specialist for the York County Area Agency on Aging.
The APPRISE program is Pennsylvania's health insurance assistance program for people with Medicare.
The counselors do not sell insurance but help adults to understand their insurance options so they can make informed decisions, Nace said.
"A lot of the people we do see are very anxious, and this is just one way we can help them," Nace said.
By comparing plans and making changes during the enrollment period, Medicare will have enough time to process those changes and ensure the new coverage is effective on Jan. 1, 2013.
During last year's enrollment period, the program helped about 2,000 people from York County, said Nace.
Anyone is welcome to sign up for a one-on-one counseling session by calling the scheduling line at 771-9001.
Appointments are available at various locations throughout York County from Oct. 17 through Dec. 5.
