Two teachers honored
Two teachers from the Southern York County School District are the most recent recipients of the 'Outstanding Teacher Award' for 2012-13, sponsored by the Shippensburg University School Study Council.
Friendship Elementary School first-grade teacher Sue Barnhart and Southern Middle School social studies teacher Andrew Warren will be honored with the award at a luncheon Nov. 14 at Shippensburg University.
As a middle school social studies teacher, Warren began his eighth year teaching at the district. He teaches world history to seventh-graders and United States history to eighth-graders. A graduate of Penn State, Warren earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the university.
Barnhart has worked in the district for 23 years, having been a teacher and reading specialist at Southern Elementary for 12 years and a teacher at Friendship Elementary for the past 11 years.
Barnhart received her bachelor's degree from Millersville University and her master's degree from Western Maryland College (McDaniel College).
St. Paul United Church of Christ, 161 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, has announced its chicken barbecue, scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled. It will not be rescheduled.
Saturday in the Park
Springettsbury Township will host its 10th annual Saturday in the Park event on Saturday at Springettsbury Township park, located off of Mount Zion Road.
Saturday in the Park is a day for the whole family, with carnival games, inflatable attractions, sporting events, live music and a variety of food.
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a 5K Race & Fun Run and continue at 11:30 a.m. with the ninth annual Randy Stetler 3 on 3 Memorial Classic Basketball Tournament.
The main event begins at noon and continues throughout the day.
Springettsbury will feature its athletic fields through Panthers Soccer, York Little League and YorkTowne Patriots Football games and activities. The amphitheater will host an array of dance team performances, a Chili Eating Contest and a performance by The Flamin' Caucasians.
The event will host its third annual A Taste of Springettsbury benefiting the Springettsbury Sertoma Club. Tickets are $10 per person and allow you to enjoy samples from an assortment of participating vendors. Participation in the Silent Auction is included with the ticket.
The day will finish with a fireworks display at 8 p.m. In the case of severe weather conditions, the event will be postponed until Sunday, following a similar schedule. Listen to WINK 103.3 or 96.1 WSOX for event updates.
The Spirit of Youth Awards Breakfast, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, 5K Race and Fun Run, CYCTC Chicken BBQ and a Taste of Springettsbury will take place on Saturday rain or shine. A complete schedule is on the township's website at www.springettsbury.com.
Rock and mineral weekend
The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will present rock and mineral weekend at Nixon County Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. There will be activities and programs for the entire family.
There is a $2 admission fee per person, which is good for the entire weekend. Additional costs may apply for participation in certain programs, though most are free.

Temple Baptist Church, 2550 Pine Grove Road, York Township, is hosting a Heavenly Harvest Celebration for the entire community starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

---Grace Lutheran Church, 220 North Charles St., Red Lion, is sponsoring a free organ concert by Victor Fields, dean of the York Chapter of the American Guild of Organists at 3 p.m. Sunday. Refreshments follow the performance.
Fields is adjunct professor of keyboard studies at Mount St. Mary's University, Emmitsburg, Md. He also serves as an accompanist for the Harrisburg Choral Society.
---As part of its 250th Anniversary Celebration, First Presbyterian Church of York welcomes Presbybop back to the Abendmusik concert series in York.
An evening of sacred jazz will be the featured attraction as Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quartet and guest vocalist Warren Cooper will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. The concert is free and open to the public, with a free-will offering collected during the intermission. The concert will take place in the church sanctuary at 225 E. Market St., York.
---The Concert in the Grove, an outdoor Christian concert, will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Jacob's (Stone Church), 5152 Stone Church Road, Glenville.

Walk to Remember
A Walk to Remember and Celebration of Hope for families whose babies have died during pregnancy or shortly after birth will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at John Rudy County Park.

Iain R. Torrance, president of Princeton Theological Seminary, will give a lecture on the history and background of the King James Bible at 10 a.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of York.
The lecture, which will take place in the Adult Education Class in Fellowship Hall, is titled "The Bible in English: Tyndale and His Followers and Imitators."

Torrance has degrees in philosophy and in New Testament and a doctorate in early Christianity from Oxford University. He is chaplain-in-ordinary to Queen Elizabeth and served as moderator of the Church of Scotland in 2003.
Prayer service and hymn sing
There will be a fifth-Sunday ecumenical hymn sing at 7 p.m. Sunday, preceded by a service of laying on of hands and healing prayers at 6:30 p.m., at Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, 14 College Ave., Stewartstown.

Jazz in the City returns
Downtown York's Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center will once again team up with the city of York and Downtown Inc to present Jazz in the City, a monthly jazz concert series.
The series will kick off Friday, Oct. 5, and run through June.
Under the artistic direction of Jeff Stabley, Jazz in the City will welcome regional musicians each month during First Friday festivities from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Studio at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center, 50 N. George St., York.
The first Jazz in the City event will feature the Rev. Dr. Dred "Perky" Scott on vocals; Kirk Reese on piano; Steve Meashey on bass; Mac White on percussion; and Jeff Stabley on drums.
Jazz in the City tickets are $3 for general admission or free with a valid student ID. Tickets will be sold only at the door at the Philadelphia Street entrance and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
