On Sept. 28 the students, staff and friends of the Tidings of Peace Christian School in York spent three hours gathering litter and larger trash in and throughout the city. A hundred volunteers came together to collect 12 tons of illegally placed trash in the city, and $6,000 was raised to help the school.

I would like to thank all of those individuals and organizations that made our annual Trash-a-thon successful: Cassie Dennis and the City of York's Department of Parks, the York County Food Bank, Asbury United Methodist Church, York County Solid Waste, Michelle Dunn of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and Waste Management all helped us.

This event helped remind us that we are not an island unto ourselves, but part of a caring and generous community.
