I am surprised that the newspaper is silent on the crime rate in York City (specifically shootings and murders) and lack of information on what is being done about it. I never see the mayor discuss it.

Rather than putting flowers and ornamental sculptures throughout York City, we should first make it a safe place to visit.

For example, the business at Five Guys and the shooting there and at other places on Route 30: The police had to know 200 people were hanging out there for months. My son told me about it months before, since he worked on a restaurant on Route 30. Why did the police not squelch that?

Nothing was done and someone was shot -- several someones since then. I understand the West York police were first on the scene (the Five Guys shootings) -- why would that be? Where were the city police? Were they not monitoring the Route 30 site? West York has been the first responders on more than one city incident.

Here's a bit of information from a website called NeighborhoodScout:

"With a crime rate of 56 per one thousand residents, York has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes -- from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 18. Within Pennsylvania, more than 97% of the communities have a lower crime rate than York.

"More importantly, when you compare York to other communities of similar population, the York crime rate (violent and property crimes combined) is quite a bit higher than average. Regardless of how York does relative to all communities in America of all sizes, when NeighborhoodScout compared it to communities of similar population size, its crime rate per thousand residents stands out as higher than most."

I know you don't want to frighten people, but seeing murders each weekend in the paper does frighten them. It's time something is done about it. The mayor has more problems than bringing people to York; they need to stay away until the crime is lessened.
