Julie Hein, 45, of West Manchester Township, will be heading to the Farm Show this weekend hoping for a win, too.

She's hoping to take the $500 grand prize for her angel food cake. New to the cake competition this year will be Old Fashioned Fudge and Cupcake contests, joining old standbys like the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie and PA Preferred Chocolate Cake contests.

Hein placed first at the York Fair for her banana split angel food cake entry, which allowed her to advance to the Farm Show in that category.

"I'm a lot more confident in my chocolate cake than in my angel food cake," said Hein. "I have not been practicing. Until the holidays were over I couldn't really practice."

Hein will deliver her cake Sunday, and it will be judged at noon with more than 75 other entries. After the cakes are judged and a winner is chosen, the entries are cut into slices and handed out to the audience, said Hein.

"I love to make cake and I love to eat cake, but I'm definitely more of a baker than a chef. I don't enjoy cooking dinner at all," she said.
