United Way recently held an award day to recognize people who make a difference for the United Way and the community.

The organization's breakfast meeting and awards presentation was held Monday at the Yorktowne Hotel in York City.

Representatives from the United Way's board of directors and 36 partner agencies attended the event, according to its news release.

The meeting gave partner agencies an opportunity to learn more about the organization's goals, objectives, mission, program funding and plans for the upcoming fiscal year.

The United Way, led by executive director Robert Woods, also recognized several people.

"We look at each individual's body of work and involvement and time spent with our organization," Woods said in a statement. "We also consider how they've contributed toward advancing United Way's mission.

Honorees included:

---Michael Hady, vice-president of business development at Memorial Hospital, received the Distinguished Service Award for his 10-plus years on the United Way's board of directors, executive committee, campaign cabinet and communications & marketing committee. He chairs both the United Way's leadership giving council and governance committee.

---J.T. Hand, with the York Water Co., received the Volunteer of the Year Award. Hand has served on the United Way's board of directors, community impact committee. He is chair of the public policy committee.

---Henry Maul received the Labor Award. Maul, retired from Harley-Davidson Motor Co., was a union leader with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) Local Lodge 175. He is active with the York-Adams Central Labor Council, the IAMAW Retirees Action Group and United Way Labor Advisory Committee.

---Senior York County Judge John C. Uhler received the Community Building Award. He served as a juvenile court judge, among other duties, for the past 22 years. He is president of the York Bar Association. He was president judge from 1995 to 2001. He initiated the first Juvenile Mental Health Court while leading the York County Truancy Prevention Initiative.
