Carol Oldenburg has a hard time explaining emotion, but she can paint it.

Oldenburg, 56, of York City, created two emotion-filled oil paintings that will be featured in the 45th annual Art of the State Exhibit at State Museum of Pennsylvania.

On Saturday, the museum -- at 300 North St. in Harrisburg -- will hold an artists' reception where the museum and the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council will give more than $7,000 in first-, second- and third-place awards to works in the categories of painting, photography, sculpture, craft and works on paper.

The exhibit, which opens to the public at noon on Sunday, consists of 129 works created by 115 artists from 30 counties, according to the museum's news release.

the museum received 1,836 entries from 680 artists who submitted work, vying for a spot in the exhibit.

The exhibit will be open during museum hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 on Sunday until Sept. 9.

"It's a fairly prestigious to be accepted into the show," Oldenburg said. "It's a good opportunity. It's not easy to get in. It's good to see art from a diverse number of artists from all over the state and not just limited to one region."

Nine Yorkers: Oldenburg is one of nine York County artists whose works will be featured in the exhibit. She said two of her paintings will be in the exhibit.

One painting, called "Day of Remembrance," commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 1, 2001, terrorist attacks in America. The painting features a depiction of the dark sky that appeared over Mount Rose Cemetery in Spring Garden Township on Sept. 11, 2011.

"The piece brought out my emotions," Oldenburg said. "It has a turbulent sky. The mood I wanted to convey in the painting was the idea of a dark sky

with light coming through."

The second painting is "Bad Dog," which shows the emotions of a dog that has been scolded for doing something wrong, Oldenburg said.

Oldenburg said her work was last accepted into the exhibit in 2004.

Richard Chandler Hoff, 67, of East Hopewell Township, said this is his third straight year having his artwork in the exhibit.

His piece is a graphite pencil drawing called "The 3 O'clock to Chicago." The drawing features an image of a train at a train station in the 1940s, said Hoff, senior designer with local Phoenixx Design Associates.

"I always like to draw life in the U.S. during the 1940s," he said. "The interest came from stories that my mother and father told me about what it was like when my father was in the (World War II) and being married. There was romance, but a lot of chaos in the world."

Both Oldenburg and Hoff said they plan to be at Saturday's award reception. They said that though they have never won an exhibit award, they are honored to be part of the art presentation.

"People are very professional who run the show," he said. "From my first time in the exhibit, I saw how they treat the artists. I was treated like a king. The level of quality that the show represents. It's an honor to be part of that quality."
