The man who was the inspiration for the movie "Dolphin Tale" is coming to York.
Kevin Carroll is the prosthetist portrayed by Morgan Freeman in the movie about the true story of Winter the dolphin, who was injured when she became caught in a crab trap and lost her tail fluke.
Carroll and his colleague Dan Strzempka created a prosthetic tail fluke for Winter, making her the first dolphin to have her entire tail fluke replaced by a prosthetic device.
Carroll also developed WintersGel, a new liner material used to fit the dolphin with a prosthetic tail.
Free clinic: He will be holding a free clinic at Hanger Clinic, formerly Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics Inc., 1603 Rodney Road, West Manchester Township, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The clinic will include education for local amputees and information on what is available with the latest prosthetic technology.
Participants will have the chance to try the OmniVR, a virtual reality rehabilitation tool that uses infrared light to track the user's body position and movements.
Carroll has been a board-certified prosthetist for more than 30 years and serves as the vice president of prosthetics for Hanger, which has seven locations in Central Pennsylvania and other patient care centers across the United States.
York residents who are interested in the clinic may sign up by calling 800-838-3357.
