Spring Grove High School graduate Shane Henry won the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Golf Invitational recently for Millersville University.
Henry earned his first career tournament title by fighting off a strong, gusting wind at Penn Oaks Country Club.
Henry stood tied for fourth place and three strokes off the pace entering the second round. On a difficult scoring day in which only eight of the 46 golfers in the field cracked 80, Henry shot the second-lowest round of the day with a 3-over-par 74. Paired with his opening-round 76, Henry finished at 8-over-par, besting Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawk Brad Boyle by one stroke. He helped Millersville to a second-place team finish.
Henry's victory makes him the first Marauder to earn medalist honors since Nick Magenta's win at the Gannon Invitational in the fall of 2009. A veteran of 34 career tournaments, his previous best finish was a 10th-place finish at the 2010 PSAC Championships.
