The No. 7 York College men's soccer team picked up their first Capital Athletic Conference triumph of the season besting visiting Mary Washington 3-0 Saturday afternoon.
The league victory pushes the Spartans' 2013 mark to 8-1 (1-0 CAC) while the Eagles drop to 6-4 (0-1 CAC).
Finding the back of the net less than 12 minutes into the match, York senior center back Aaron Beale (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) fired home his first goal of the 2013 campaign. Lining up a corner kick from the left, Chris Weaver (Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) sent in the service which was initially knocked away. Beale, pushing up from his defensive position for the corner, collected the loose ball at the top of the box and rifled his strike from right to left across the goal for the Green and White's first tally of the day.
Just prior to Beale's opening salvo however, Mary Washington almost held a 1-0 lead of their own when Jacob Burke's header struck the crossbar 9:40 into the contest.
Owning a 1-0 lead, the Spartans nearly saw Mary Washington even the match with a dangerous attack just seconds before halftime. From the right side, Lino Gallo served a low ball across the face of the Spartan goal. With a pair of Eagle runners heading toward the service, a Spartan defender caused just enough discomfort as the ball passed harmlessly over the end line.
York opened it up in the second half tallying twice early in the frame.
Christopher Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) gave the Green and White a 2-0 advantage less than eight minutes into the half. Brendan Saberton (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) launched a long throw in from the right side of the field which Christopher headed home.
Just under six minutes later Christopher Gillespie (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) netted York's third of the match on another header. Beale struck a free kick from the middle of the field which Christopher Saberton deflected up into the air. Able to get his head to the ball, Gillespie popped it up over Mary Washington goalkeeper Ian Waltz for the match's final tally.
For the contest, the Spartans held a 15-10 advantage in shots and a slight 4-3 edge in corners.
Spartan goalkeeper Brad Schmidt (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) collected the win making one save for the Green and White over his 68:12. Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin) relieved Schmidt and registered two stops over his 13:14 of work before Tanner Good (Navron, Pa./Pequea Valley) completed the clean sheet over the final 8:34. Waltz made a trio of saves for the visiting Eagles.
York returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when it travels to Eastern University for a 4 p.m. non-conference tilt. The Green and White then hosts CAC newcomer Christopher Newport on Saturday, October 5, in a 3 p.m. start during York's annual Fall Fest weekend.
