The York College women's lacrosse team gave powerhouse Franklin & Marshall all it could handle on Tuesday afternoon, before falling 7-6.
The Diplomats came into the match at York's Kinsley Field ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, but the unranked Spartans were tied with F&M 5-5 with just more than eight minutes left.
F&M, however, scored the next two goals to take the lead for good.
Kim Wayson (two goals, one assist) and Erica Mulford (two goals) led the York attack. Leah Schultz and Kerri Nicolich had the Spartans' other scores. Kelsey Evans made nine saves in goal for York.
Lauren Ehrhardt paced F&M with two goals and two assists.
F&M, which advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight in 2011, had a 20-16 edge in shots in the evenly-played game.
The loss was the first of the season for York, which dropped to 4-1. F&M improved to 2-0.
