While contractors on Wednesday did grading and site work at the home of the first Red Robin in York County, franchise owners explained the new restaurant will be the first of its kind for the Colorado-based gourmet burger chain.
Franchisee Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group Inc. plans to open the restaurant in Springettsbury Township next to the York Galleria in November.
"It's not your grandma's Red Robin, but we hope she will still come," said Cindy Lobach, a township resident and partner in the restaurant group.
It will be the franchisee's 21st restaurant in 21 years and the first time a new look will be revealed for all 450 restaurants in the corporate chain.
The new Red Robin will include an adults-only bar with a fireplace and upscale interior, a separate area for families and fun, and a central gathering space.
Other changes include a new service model, more burger recipes and new furniture and decor.
More than 100 local residents and public officials learned of the model during a groundbreaking ceremony late Wednesday morning.
"There are 435,000-plus residents in York County who are anxious to come to Red Robin," said York County Commissioner Doug Hoke.
He also applauded the locally owned franchisee for working with a local bank and local contractor and creating jobs.
York Traditions bank is providing the financing, and Lobar Associates is building the restaurant.
Hiring: Red Robin will create 150 jobs, which will be advertised at www.redrobin.jobs on Sept. 1. Hiring will begin that month, said David Saba, a spokesman for the restaurant project.
The franchisee previously considered opening locations in York Township and Red Lion, but those plans never came to fruition.
Once the Springettsbury Township restaurant is up and running, Red Robin will give back to the community, said franchisee CEO Jim Ryan.
The restaurant will work with local athletic organizations, schools and more, he said.
It will also help raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Lobach said.
"We want to be a positive part of the community," she said.
