For years, Amy Brinton has wanted to do something for veterans.
A history major in college, Brinton said she "had that background knowledge of what happened in Vietnam and how soldiers were treated when they came back."
Fortunately, veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been treated better at home.
Still, Brinton said, "I always felt like I needed to do something to help, especially as time went on, with the guys that were coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq."
A year ago, the Dover woman got an idea.
Brinton, the Democratic executive director for the state House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, attended a fundraiser for the Keystone Wounded Warriors.
Legislators bowled, and the group got money for every strike.
The idea: Brinton, a 2001 graduate of York College, said she approached the organization's director about doing something similar. He suggested a 5K.
"I laughed, and I said, 'Yeah, I don't run,'" she said.
Brinton said she continued to brainstorm. She considered a golf tournament but decided that didn't feel right.
Then, she remembered the Wiffle ball tournament a friend hosts in his backyard.
And the idea for next week's home run derby at Santander Stadium was born. Brinton has dubbed the event Home Runs for Heroes.
Anyone is welcome to participate. The cost to enter the batter's box is $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the event.
Home Runs for Heroes is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the stadium, home of the York Revolution.
General admission tickets, which cost $10, include admission to the derby, access to watch the Revs batting practice at 3 p.m. and box tickets to the 6:30 p.m. game against the Southern Maryland Crabs.
There will also be Wiffle ball for kids and a silent auction.
Brinton said she'd hoped to raise between $5,000 and $7,000 for the Keystone Wounded Warriors. Corporate donations have already brought the total to $13,000, she said.
She's hoping the derby pushes the total to $15,000.
