Southern Regional Police on Monday asked people to avoid a portion of Main Street in New Freedom because of a downed utility pole with live electrical wires.

The incident caused about 2,000 Met-Ed customers to lose electric service, according to Kathy Seilhamer, Met-Ed spokeswoman.

Crews were able to quickly reroute electric service, restoring about 1,200 customers, she said.

The 850 to 1,000 customers still without power will have their service restored when the pole is replaced, which should be about 3 p.m. Monday, Seilhamer said.

Main Street between Front and Broad streets remains closed until the wires and pole can be fixed, police said.

Crews were called to the area about 8:45 a.m.
