Entering Day Two of the PIAA individual wrestling championships at Hershey's Giant Center, eight grapplers from the York-Adams League were still in contention in the Class AAA tournament while nine others remained on the Class AA side.
However, just one local grappler advanced to the semifinals on the Class AAA side (Kennard-Dale senior Chance Marsteller) while three others moved on to the semis in Class AA (Hanover senior Ian Brown, Bermudian Springs junior Briton Shelton and Bermudian Springs senior Tristan Sponseller).
Brown (132 pounds) and Sponseller (195) both won their semifinal match-ups to advance to Saturday's gold medal matches while Shelton (160) lost in the semis to bump down to the third round of consolations.
Class AAA quarterfinal round winners advance to Saturday's semifinal round while losers went to the second round of consolations. Two grapplers from the York-Adams League had already advanced to the second round of consolations Friday: K-D sophomore Mike Bracey (113) and Dallastown senior Wes Hoover (138). Joining them there after losses in Friday's quarterfinal round were Spring Grove seniors Zack Clingan (120), Mike Hartman (145) and Mason Bentzel (152) along with South Western sophomore Owen Wherley (120) and Dallastown senior Rodney Sunday (126).
Sunday, Hartman and Bentzel all won their second round consolation matches to advance to Saturday's third round of consolations and guarantee themselves top-eight finishes in their weight classes.
Bracey, Clingan, Wherley and Hoover all lost in the second round of consolations to bring their seasons to a close. Bracey, a District 3-AAA silver medalist, finished the year with a 30-9 individual record. Clingan, a district gold medalist, ends the year with a 39-5 record. Wherley, a district bronze medalist, finished with a 36-7 record. Hoover, a district bronze medalist, ends the year with a 30-9 record.
MARSTELLER: Kennard-Dale senior Chance Marsteller (170 pounds) was the lone York-Adams League grappler to advance to Saturday's Class AAA semifinal round by defeating Downingtown senior Gabe Hale by technical fall, 19-3, in 4 minutes and 47 seconds. Marsteller will next face Chartiers Valley senior and returning PIAA qualifier Noah Wilps in Saturday's semifinal round.
CLASS AA: Brown will square off against Boiling Springs junior Kyle Shoop in Saturday's 132-pound gold medal match while Sponseller faces Corry senior Ryan Morris in the 195-pound championship bout.
Shelton (160) won his fourth round consolation bout to advance to Saturday's 160-pound bronze medal match, where he will face Milton senior Ryan Preisch.
Since losing in Thursday's opening round, Fairfield senior Nick Mort (170) has now won four-straight bouts to advance to Saturday's 170-pound bronze medal match, where he will square off against Franklin sophomore Dakota Geer, who has also won four-straight since losing in Thursday's opening round.
Hanover senior Tyler Shafer (145) lost in the quarterfinal round, won his second round consolation bout but lost in the third round of consolations. He'll wrestle Saturday in the 145-pound seventh-place match against Pius X junior Michael Comunale.
Bermudian Springs juniors Colton Dull (182) and Sam McCollum (220) each lost in Thursday's opening round then won two straight before losing in the third round of consolations Friday. They'll each wrestle for seventh place Saturday.
