Red Robin is close to building its first location in York County.

Franchisee Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group, Inc. intends to open the gourmet burger restaurant in Springettsbury Township next to the York Galleria.

The eatery is expected to open this fall, but a date hasn't been set, said Jeffrey Lobach, general counsel for the franchisee and managing partner with Barley Snyder in York.

"We still need to get land development plans approved," he said.

Springettsbury Township Manager John Holman said the township received a land development plan on Thursday.

"Certainly we look forward to anyone investing in the township and creating jobs," he said.

Red Robin would add about 100 jobs and be built on the east side of the Galleria, right off Mount Zion Road, in the mall parking lot closest to Boscov's, Lobach said.

"It's a strong retail site. That's one of the factors in choosing that area," he said.

The franchisee previously eyed York Township and Red Lion as possible sites, but those deals fell through. Red Robin's corporate office didn't approve the York Township deal, and a developer didn't finish plans in Red Lion, Lobach said.

A restaurant in Springettsbury Township will be Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group's 21st restaurant in the eastern part of the state and the first one in the county.

Getting a Red Robin in York County is long overdue, Lobach said.

"We're past it being the right time in York. We've been looking for a long time and think this market could support more than one Red Robin," he said.

The group is looking at other sites in York, but Lobach wouldn't confirm possible locations.

When asked if the franchisee might open a restaurant at the revamped West Manchester Mall, he said, "We're definitely aware of it. I can't say anything more."

Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group has opened one Red Robin a year since 1993.

The Colorado-based chain serves more than 24 fresh, gourmet burgers in a variety of recipes, according to the company website. It also offers salads, sandwiches, soups, entrees and more.
