A Shrewsbury Township man was killed Monday night when a car his brother was driving crashed into a tree while fleeing the scene of a previous York Township crash, police said.

Timothy A. Hartless, 51, was rushed to York Hospital from the scene of the 6:13 p.m. crash in the 200 block of Reynolds Mill Road, according to York County Deputy Coroner Steve Cosey.

Hartless died at the hospital at 6:39 p.m., Cosey said. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning at Allentown's Lehigh Valley Hospital, he said.

The victim's brother, 48-year-old Jamey Ray Hartless, who lived with his brother at 12853 Glen Brook Court in the Glen Brook Trailer Park, was in satisfactory condition Tuesday morning at York Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

Charges pending: York Area Regional Police Lt. Tobin Zech said Jamey Hartless will be criminally charged, but the exact offenses he faces won't be determined until the investigation is complete.

According to police, he was driving a black 1988 Chevrolet Camaro in the 2500 block of South George Street in York Township when he struck a Pontiac Sunfire at 6:11 p.m.

Zech said the Sunfire had mechanical problems and its driver had pulled to the side of the road and called his father to help him get the car started.

The driver, whose name was not released, was sitting in the Sunfire's driver seat with his legs hanging out the door when the Camaro sideswiped the car, according to the lieutenant.

Door knocked off: The force of the crash knocked the driver door off the car, but somehow the driver escaped injury, Zech said.

After hitting the Sunfire, Jamey Hartless fled south on South George Street, according to police.

A witness to the crash followed the Camaro for a short time but stopped because it was moving at a high rate of speed, police said.

Two minutes after the first crash, police were called to the 200 block of Reynolds Mill Road, where the Camaro struck a tree, then a stop sign at Kresta Drive, police said.

Anyone with information about either crash is asked to call police at (717) 741-1259.
