Call it reverse trick-or-treating for adults if you will. On Saturday, York County residents can drop off unused prescription drugs during National Drug Take Back Day.

Seven local police departments will collect drugs at eight locations across the county.

Sgt. Rick Trout of the West Manchester Township Police said there are a number of reasons to turn in unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

"One of which is prescription drugs have become almost as abused as illegal drugs," he said.

Another reason, the sergeant said, is that it keeps the drugs from getting into the sewer system and damaging the environment.

The drug take-backs are organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with local and state law enforcement agencies taking part.

Taking part: State police, among with West Manchester Township, York Area Regional, Northern York County Regional, Springettsbury Township, Hanover and Southern York County Regional police departments will host collection sites at area Giant Food Stores.

Drug take-backs have proven popular in the past.

Officials collected 371 tons of medications nationwide during a take-back held in April, according to the DEA.

That brings the total amount collected over the course of six take-back events to 1,409 tons.

Despite the popularity of the twice-yearly events, the number of collection points has dropped off.

The York County Solid Waste Authority started a program about a year ago that allows residents to deposit their expired and unwanted medications in receptacles found at 11 police stations in the county.

However, Trout said the take-back events, which are manned by officers and station staff, allow police to interact with the public, whereas the receptacles don't.
