Two men escaped injury Wednesday night when gunfire rang out during an armed robbery in Spring Garden Township, police said.

The two victims, both in their early 20s, were robbed at 11:03 p.m. on Elmwood Boulevard, just south of East Market Street, police said.

Two robbers approached the men while brandishing handguns and stole cash and a backpack, police said.

"As the suspects were fleeing the scene, one of them turned around and fired two shots, one of which struck the victims' car," township Police Chief George Swartz said. No one was hurt, he said.

The robbers are both black males, about 6 feet tall, with thin to medium builds and were wearing dark-colored hooded sweatshirts, dark-colored pants and bandannas over their faces, police said.

Police did not release the victims' names, but said one lives in York City and the other lives in Lancaster.

Swartz said investigators will look into whether Wednesday's holdup is related to a recent armed robbery of York College students, as both robberies were committed by two armed males.

But Swartz noted the robberies happened in different areas and said there's no indication at this point they're connected.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (717) 843-0851, or call 911. Callers can remain anonymous, the chief said.
