Southern York County school district officials say new technology initiatives for the 2013-14 school year should improve communication between parents, students and teachers.

The district plans to expand its use of Blackboard and use it with Google Apps with that goal in mind.

Teachers will create a page for each class that they are teaching, which can be viewed by the students and their parents by downloading the app to any device.

The page will allow members of the class to email each other and the teacher whenever they have a question about a certain class. This allows for class discussions outside of school.

Teachers can post class anouncements to the page, such as test reminders and homework assignments.

Teachers can also post handouts, powerpoint presentations, useful websites, documents they created in Google apps and toolkits, such as math equations.

Southern introduced Google apps to the district this past school year. The technology department found that the program worked well for the district and decided to add the Blackboard program to expand on what the teachers can share with students and parents online, school officials said.
