Everyone can do something to help each other.

That's Susie Buchmyer's concept about her Give BACC (Because a Community Cares) program at her company, where she and employees give out free meal bags to individuals and families in need.

Buchmyer's Pools will give food away from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in its parking lot at 713 Arsenal Road in Springettsbury Township.

This is the fourth year for the event, Buchmyer said. More than 200 people are expected to show up for food.

The company also is raising money to give to York's Helping Hand for the Homeless Inc. and York Rescue Mission.

Since the program's inception, Buchmyer's Pools raised close to $8,000 and donated more than $10,000 in groceries to the agencies, according to Buchmyer.

For Saturday's giveaway, Buchmyer's Pools has been collecting food donations from the public, local grocery stores, markets and farmers, she said.

"We all have a part in helping out and giving back," Buchmyer said. "You can donate food, write a check, donate your change. This something everyone can participate in, do something for others in different ways."

No registration is required to receive the food that will be distributed on a first-come, first-served bases, Buchmyer said. Each bag of food will contain at least three meals and fresh produce. Each bag contains $8 in food, she said.

"There's no criteria to get the food and we don't judge," Buchmyer said. "Just follow the signs through the parking lot, let us put food in your car. We do it like a drive through."

In 2010, the program's first year, Buchmyer's gave away 150 meals. Last year, more than 200 meal bags were distributed. The goal this year is to give out 250 meal bags, Buchmyer said.

Remaining meal bags and other food donations are divided up and given to the rescue mission and York Helping Hands, she said.

Buchmyer said she is grateful that she and her company have an opportunity to offer a food giveaway program to the community.

"We feel very fortunate and just want to do something to help out those in need and less fortunate than we are," she said.

Food and monetary donations can be dropped off at the Springettsbury Township location and at Buchmyer's Pools' other store at 1418 Baltimore St. in the Grandview Plaza in Hanover.

Checks should be written out to York's Helping Hand for the Homeless Inc. or the York Rescue Mission in order for the donation to be tax deductible.

Checks written out to Buchmyer's will be used toward food purchase for the giveaway event.
