Amber DeLouis remembers how a church giveaway program helped her get much-needed school clothes for her children.
"I was down and out and I saw a church in Brogue doing a giveaway," she said. "They helped me and my kids. I left with five garbage bags full of clothes."
On that day seven years ago, DeLouis made a promise to herself.
"Once I became OK, I would to do the same thing for others what that church did for me," she said. "I just felt that I had to do it."
Three years ago, DeLouis made good on her promise by starting a free community shopping day at Pleasureville United Methodist Church, where she is a member.
The third annual event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, in the all-purpose room of the church at 2606 N. Sherman St. in Springettsbury Township.
The public can shop for free clothes, shoes, handbags, backpacks, hats, belts and other clothing items for men, women and children, said DeLouis, the event's coordinator.
"People can just come in and get what they need and that's it," she said. "I don't want people to feel too proud to come."
Dozens helped: At least 100 people come out to Pleasureville UMC's annual free community shopping day, said DeLouis, who has two children.
"We get people in all kinds of situations," she said. "Everybody needs a little bit of help. I want them to know there are still nice people out there willing to help one another.
DeLouis said that based on her experience with the church that helped her seven years ago, she knows that people who attend the Pleasureville UMC shopping day appreciate the help they received.
"When people say, 'Thank you' as they are leaving, I just smile and it feels good inside," she said. "That's all I need."
