A local volunteer firefighter will collect items this week to send to Oklahoma tornado victims.

Gabe Furst, an East Manchester Township resident, said he is collecting canned goods, clothing and monetary donations in the parking lot of the Roses store at 4215 N. George St., Ext., in Manchester.

The collection will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Furst is a volunteer firefighter for Eagle Fire Co. in Mount Wolf and Union Fire Engine Co. in Manchester.

He said York County can help survivors of the tornado that hit Moore, Okla., on Monday evening and claimed 24 lives.

Furst said he wants the local public to help him fill three box-truck containers with food and new or gently used clothes. There also will be canisters to collect cash donations to be used for shipping costs, he said.

"We believe that it's our duty as citizens to help out others just like we would want to be helped out if we were in that situation," Furst said.

The volunteer firefighter said he is now looking for an Oklahoma distribution site that will accept the donated items.
