WellSpan's new CEO is set to fill his post in a few months.

Kevin Mosser will be the health system's first physician to serve as president and CEO when he takes over Oct. 1, following the retirement of longtime CEO Bruce Bartels.

Mosser said he's both humbled by and excited about the privilege of leading WellSpan.

"It's a great way to serve the community," he said. "I'm just looking forward to having the opportunity."

He spoke highly of Bartels, saying he's done "brilliantly," as has WellSpan's executive team.

The organization made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. Mosser, who came to York Hospital in 1979 as a family practice resident, has been working in WellSpan for more than three decades, most recently as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

A new perspective: As health care transforms rapidly, new ideas and an understanding of the industry are important, he said. Mosser has participated in WellSpan's management and care in a variety of settings and conditions, he said.

"For better or for worse, I've worked in just about every area of the organization," he said, and that wide variety of perspectives makes for a broad look at health care.

Being a physician is not requisite to the position, but he said it gives him a fresh angle.

"When you've actually taken care of patients yourself ... it gives you a different perspective," he said.

A veteran of the health system, Mosser said he is passionate about leading it.

"It's a great organization," he said. "I love it dearly."

Mosser, who has a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, serves as chairman of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation board and Penn State Mont-Alto's Community Advisory Board.

WellSpan is an integrated health system that serves southcentral Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, with 9,000 employees, 62 physician offices and three hospitals.
