Twenty-seven police officers from 10 departments around York County raised thousands of dollars for Special Olympics of York County last week.

For the 12th year in a row, officers worked as guest waiters at the Red Lobster in Springettsbury Township on Thursday, collecting tips for Special Olympics.

They raised $4,657.25, said York City Detective Kyle Hower, who helped organize the annual event. He called the event a great success.

Customers were greeted by several Special Olympians and had the opportunity to check out the York County Quick Response Team's Bearcat vehicle, Hower said.

The York County Police Pipes and Drums band provided music for the crowd. It's comprised of Springettsbury Township Officer Jamie Miller on bagpipes and, in the drum line, Springetts Officers Justin Kinard and Cory Landis and Lower Windsor Township Cpl. James Thomas.

Officers from the following departments participated: York City, Springetts, West Manchester Township, Spring Garden Township, Newberry Township, Hellam Township, Lower Windsor Township, the York County Sheriff's Office, York Area Regional Police, Southwestern Regional Police and the York County District Attorney's Office.
