The Stewartstown Historical Society is sponsoring a demonstration on the splitting of slate for roofing shingles.
Roger Wilson will present a program that includes a demonstration of slate splitting using hammer and chisel that were once used in Delta to split the acclaimed Peach Bottom slate for roofing shingles. Wilson will also give some of the more than 100 years of history of the Welsh and slate quarrying.
There will be slate splitting tools, slate roofing tools and slate products to see such as roof shingles of many sizes, slate pencils, door stops and granules. Find out the intriguing reasons Peach Bottom Slate was known as the best roofing slate in the United States.
This program will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Stewartstown Historical Society, 17 Mill St., Stewartstown. Seating is limited. Call Roger Wilson at (717) 382-4993 to reserve a seat.
