The wife of a York County firefighter is working with other firefighters' wives across the globe to raise money for West (Texas) Volunteer Fire Department.
Danielle McCoy, whose husband, Michael, is a volunteer firefighter with Dover Township and a paid firefighter/paramedic in Howard County Fire & Rescue in Maryland, is promoting a website that is selling T-shirts to raise money for the battered department.
Five members of the West department were among 15 people killed in an explosion at a fertilizer plant in West on April 15.
T-shirts sold by Firewives.com, a group of more than 200 wives and girlfriends of firefighters, have a Maltese cross on the front with a heart in the center and the saying "Keep Calm and be FireWife Strong" on the back. The group also sells hooded sweatshirts with the same design.
The group has already raised more than $4,200 from sales, McCoy said.
"Our group really wanted it to be an effort from all fire wives," said McCoy. "It has been positively incredible to watch firefighter wives from across the country come together to support this effort."
T-shirts are $16, and a minimum of $8 will be donated. Hooded sweatshirts are $28, and almost $7 of each will be donated, she said.
The money will go to the West Volunteer Fire Department to use at their discretion.
