Some of the best high school boys' volleyball teams in Pennsylvania will descend on York County on Saturday.

The Bobcat Invitational is set to start at 8:30 a.m. at Northeastern High School.

A total of 30 teams from all over the state will compete in what has become the largest high school boys' volleyball tournament in Pennsylvania. It may well serve as a preview of the PIAA state tournament, which will be held in early June.

A number of local teams will compete, headlined by the host school and Central York. Northeastern is ranked No. 2 in the state in Class AA by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association, while Central York owns the PVCA's No. 2 spot in Class AAA.

In all, 13 of the 30 teams appearing at Northeastern are ranked by the PVCA in either AAA or AA.

In addition, all four teams which made last year's PIAA Class AA state semifinals and three of the four teams in last year's state AAA semifinals are competing.

Eight of the top 10 AAA teams in the PVCA poll will play at Northeastern, while five of the top 10 in AA will appear. The AA powers include Ambridge, which is ranked No. 1 by the PVCA.

In addition to Central York, the other AAA state-ranked teams competing are: No. 3 Hempfield, No. 4 Exeter, No. 5 Pennsbury, No. 6 Pennridge, No. 7 Parkland, No. 9 Chambersburg and No. 10 Central Dauphin.

In addition to Ambridge and Northeastern, the other state-ranked AA teams competing are: No. 4 Bethlehem Catholic, No. 5 Manheim Central and No. 7 Saegertown.

The other York-Adams League teams set to compete this weekend are: Dallastown, York Suburban, Red Lion, Susquehannock, Spring Grove and Dover.

The tournament will begin with pool play, featuring six pools of five teams each. Following pool play, the tournament format uses a series of play-in matches to separate all the teams into one of two playoff brackets -- Silver and Championship. The championship finals will be played at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

In addition, there will be a 20-team junior varsity tournament that will be played Friday afternoon and evening starting at 3:30 p.m.
