A parking experiment is under way in downtown York City.

The city's parking bureau is installing 30 "smart" meters in the blocks surrounding Continental Square as part of a pilot program, according to a news release issued Monday evening.

The meters are capable of accepting payment with coins, credit cards and debit cards, according to the news release.

"These meters fulfill the parking purchasing role without the hassle of having to carry coins for parking meters," the release reads. "Parkers simply park, pay and walk away."

The meters use solar power and rechargeable batteries "to provide ongoing power and back up power."

Questions should be directed to the parking bureau at (717) 845-1732.
