A new structural addition at St. Peter's Lutheran Church symbolizes its commitment to the community, said the Rev. Beth Schlegel, the congregation's pastor.
In 2010, St. Peter's embarked on a $740,000 project to make their church more accessible to people with disabilities. The project's construction began in June of last year and was completed in November.
The church -- at 947 N. George St. in North York -- has a new entrance with a gathering area, an elevator that rises up to the sanctuary area and lowers to the social hall, and two bathrooms for people with disabilities, Schlegel said.
Open house: The church will celebrate its completed project with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6, and a dedication service at
1 p.m. Sunday, April 7. The church will have its regular Sunday service at 10 a.m.
"For the dedication, we'll have special prayers asking God's blessing upon the new facility and upon the ministries happening there," Schlegel said.
Church members helped with the addition design and launched a fundraising campaign for the project, she said. The 300-member congregation is still working to raise about $300,000 to finish paying for the project, Schlegel said.
"There has been a great deal of work and cooperation and huge commitment on the part of the congregation to make this project possible," Schlegel said. "It's part of our commitment to being a vital part of the community."
Outreach: St. Peter's accessibility project also is an outreach ministry designed to meet the needs of the community, the pastor said.
"I hope (the public) will see that our congregation is warm and welcoming, that they'll see the history and beauty of the church, and that through us they will come to see the love of Jesus Christ," she said.
