York City Mayor Kim Bracey is encouraging residents and business owners to participate Saturday in a global effort to raise awareness of environmental issues.
Earth Hour is scheduled for 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The idea is to turn off all non-essential lights during that time.
This is the first time the city has endorsed Earth Hour, Bracey said during a press conference Thursday.
She said residents engaged on environmental issues contacted City Hall to encourage a city-wide Earth Hour.
"That makes me feel good," Bracey said.
