The Spring Grove Area School District on Wednesday appointed Todd Staub, a district parent and CFO of Utz Quality Foods, to the seat left vacant by last month's resignation of Michael Brookhart.

Staub will complete Brookhart's unexpired term, which runs through the end of 2013. He said he plans to run for re-election this fall for a four-year term.

Staub has lived in the district for 16 years and has children in the eighth grade and 11th grade. A graduate of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), with a master's from York College, he is also a member of the adjunct faculty at McDaniel College.

Staub serves as treasurer of the athletic boosters for the district.

Five candidates applied for the open board position. Each presented a brief introduction of themselves and answered a series of questions in a public interview process.

During the nominating portion of the meeting, board members narrowed it down to three candidates, had continued dialogue and ultimately chose Staub.

Board member Doug White said the board had expressed an interest in having a new member who has children in the district, a quality the other candidates did not posses. Staub's background in finance was another selling point, White said.

Following his appointment, Staub said he applied for the vacant seat because he has a vested interest in the workings of the district. He added that he is familiar with many staff and board members and looks forward to working with them in this capacity.

Budget constraints and rising operating costs are at the top of Staub's list of concerns for the district.

Staub was sworn in immediately and joined the school board for the balance of the Wednesday's meeting, but abstained from voting because of his lack of familiarity with the agenda items.
