York's newest movie experience opened with a few explosions and a catch phrase Wednesday night at Frank Theatres in York Township.

The York Township multiplex unveiled its massive new IMAX screen to the public with the showing of the action film "A Good Day to Die Hard."

Wednesday night wasn't John Kaminski's first experience with IMAX, but he said watching the action film in the larger-than-life format was impressive.

"I feel that it pulled you in more than it would in a normal theater," he said.

Kaminski and York College classmate Mike Frederick, both from Stewartstown, said they were also big fans of the audio that accompanied the film.

Frederick said the audio was clearer than when watching a movie in a regular theater.

First in York: IMAX, which is an abbreviation for Image Maximum, allows movies to be shown in greater resolution and size compared to conventional theater systems.

The new IMAX screen is the first in York County and one of 700 worldwide, Kristy Stratton, director of theater marketing for IMAX, had said.

Frank Theatres will offer five to six showings daily on its IMAX screen, beginning about 11:30 a.m. and ending around midnight.

Though movies might not remain in IMAX for long, getting bumped for the newest releases, they will still be available on the regular theater screens.

A number of films have been shot specifically for IMAX, and Hollywood has kept the format in mind when filming some movies.

Some scenes in "Star Trek Into Darkness" were filmed with IMAX cameras, meaning those scenes will take up the entire IMAX screen.

Both Frederick and Kaminski said they each saw

films in IMAX before and liked what they saw.

However, not all films may be good for the format, Frederick said.

"I wouldn't see, like, a comedy or a drama, but an action or a horror film is worth it," he said.
