A hearing concerning the future of a Newberry Township golf course has been postponed for a second time.

Newberry Township canceled a Jan. 17 hearing between its board of supervisors and Golf Enterprises Inc., which operates Valley Green Golf Course. The curative amendment hearing would discuss Golf Enterprises' request to convert the golf course to residential zoning instead of open space.

Newberry Township manager Don Keener said Golf Enterprises requested the meeting be canceled but did not indicate why or if they are still going to pursue the zoning change. Golf Enterprises could not be reached for comment.

A previously scheduled hearing for Oct. 25 had been postponed.

Background: Golf Enterprises Inc. has proposed to amend the zoning to residential so that McNaughton Homes - which owns Valley Green Golf Course - can have room for a 400-unit development. The plan would pave the township's only green space, opponents say.

In July, the Valley Green Residents Organization formed to create awareness of the issue and stall the plan, attending public meetings and hosting rallies.
