A best-selling author of Civil War historical novels is coming to York this summer.
Jeffrey Shaara, author of "Gods and Generals" and "The Last Full Measure," will speak and sign books at a fundraiser for the York County Heritage Trust on June 27 at the Country Club of York.
Shaara's appearance will kick-start the nonprofit's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Melanie Hady, a spokeswoman for the trust, said Shaara seemed like a perfect fit, considering "he has a whole resume full of history-oriented novels and best-sellers."
Shaara's "Gods and Generals" was adapted into a movie of the same name, and he also wrote books on several other American-fought wars. His father, Michael Shaara, won a Pulitzer for "The Killer Angels," which served as the inspiration for Jeffrey's prequel and sequel novels.
Hady said a new, York County-focused "Fiery Trial: York County's Civil War Experience" exhibit
will open to the public June 29 at the end of the kick-off weekend. The exhibit, which will remain up for 18 months, will let visitors see how York County tied into the Civil War. Several yet-to-be announced programs will be held throughout the exhibit's run, she said.
Details on the exhibit and Shaara's appearance, which will have a limited number of seats available to the public, will be released in the near future. For more information, visit www.yorkheritage.org.
