An 81-year-old North Codorus Township man was struck and killed by a car as he was retrieving his mail Wednesday afternoon.

Wayne H. Brennamen of the 3300 block of Days Mill Road was in the middle of the road when he was struck by a car driven by an 18-year-old Seven Valleys woman, according to Southwestern Regional Police.

The incident occurred in front of Brennamen's home on Days Mill Road near Apple Butter Lane, said Police Chief Gregory Bean.

Brennamen's mailbox is across Days Mill Road from his house.

"He had walked across the street and got his mail and was walking back across to his residence when he was struck," Bean said.

Unavoidable: Danielle Alkin, no exact address provided, was driving a 1990 Plymouth Horizon westbound when she struck Brennamen, police said.

Alkin was not injured in the crash but was emotionally shaken by the incident, Bean said.

Days Mill Road is hilly and has a slight curve and does not have road shoulders in the area where the crash occurred.

"(She) just didn't expect to see someone walk into the path of the vehicle," Bean said of Alkin.

Preliminary information and eyewitness accounts indicate that the crash was unavoidable, police said.

However, a full crash reconstruction of the incident needs to be completed, police said.

Police don't expect to file charges against Alkin.

"At this point, we don't believe any charges will be filed," Bean said.

Any additional witnesses to the crash are asked to contact officer Holly Jackson at 717-225-1333 ext. 114.
