The Department of Public Works on Tuesday asked 29 families to leave their homes. The sinkhole first developed Monday and partially swallowed a six-ton city trash truck.
City spokesman Robert Philbin tells WHTM-TV ( http://bit.ly/WYRX3F) the sinkhole has led to a prolonged loss of water, gas and sewer service in the neighborhood. The Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter nearby.
Officials say the sinkhole collapsed Monday due to an eroded sewer pipe.
