Two barking dogs may have saved a Conewago Township couple from losing even more property to a thief.

About 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, a married couple were sleeping in the second-floor bedroom of their home in the 4300 block of Lewisberry Road when their two dogs began barking frantically, according to Lt. David Lash of Northern York County Regional Police.

The dogs also were in the bedroom, and the door was shut, Lash said.

The husband opened the door, then followed his barking dogs downstairs to the kitchen, where he discovered a window had been forced out of their back door and was lying on the kitchen floor, Lash said; window blinds on the door also were in disarray.

The thief responsible for pushing the window out of the door frame was able to reach inside and grab the wife's purse from the kitchen counter, Lash said.

The lieutenant said it's possible the barking dogs kept the thief from getting inside the home and stealing more property.

The thief left tire tracks on the couple's snow-covered driveway, which showed he fled south on Lewisberry Road, Lash said.
