Calls to a Sheetz spokesperson were not immediately returned Sunday morning.
Several customers left comments on the Sheetz Facebook page complaining of gas outages at Sheetz locations in Chambersburg, Carlisle, Halifax and Harrisburg. The response issued by Sheetz to those comments said:
"Currently, we are experiencing fuel shortages in some locations throughout Eastern & Central PA, but we are working to get supply to these stores as soon as possible."
"Since Super Storm Sandy hit, the petroleum supply chain has been stressed, but to the best of our knowledge this is a brief interruption in distribution. Our stores are still open for business and customers can depend on us for all food, beverage & convenience needs."
Sheetz has 431 locations in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. As of Sunday morning, Rutter's was not experiencing shortages at any of its locations, said Scott Hartman, President and CEO of Rutter's.
"We called Pennsylvania Emergency Management 10 days ago and put them on notice that we were concerned about possible shortages," Hartman said. "We have been doing a lot of different hustling to try to keep that problem from coming to our stores and we have been working with our transport companies to get drivers into various terminals for the last week."
Rutter's is due for a large shipment of gasoline through the pipeline on Monday night, assuming that it arrives on time, said Hartman.
"It's been sort of a daily situation but we've been working on it. People do not need to go top off," Hartman said.
The shortages are a supply chain issue related to Hurricane Sandy, he said. Some of the pipelines were shut off in advance of the hurricane and there have been issues getting shipments into the New York harbor, he said.
"When you start shutting things down and until they are able to restart everything, we are now sort of in this domino effect," Hartman said.
Rutter's Farm Stores has more than 55 stores in York, Lancaster, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin and Franklin counties.
