No one was injured in a four-vehicle crash that's been blamed on a mattress on Interstate 83 in Fairview Township on Tuesday.
Amanda B. Sewell, 31, of York was driving a 2003 Chrysler Voyager northbound in the left lane of the highway when she saw a mattress blocking the lane about 5:15 p.m., according to state police.
Sewell and Shalyn E. Bowman, 31, of York Haven, who was driving a 2007 Nissan Sentra behind Sewell, were able to stop before hitting the mattress, police said.
Adam Goshorn, 28, of Camp Hill, who was driving a 2002 Dodge Ram, was behind the Sentra and was slowing and changing lanes when the pickup was struck from behind by a 2005 Chevrolet C5500 driven by Joseph W. Stigerwalt, 30, of Danville, police said.
That set off a chain reaction with each vehicle hitting the one in front of it.
Stigerwalt, who was cited for following too closely, was able to drive the Chevrolet from the scene. The other three vehicles were towed, police said.
