Dover High School graduate Sammie Strausbaugh has been named the Atlantic Sun Women's Volleyball Freshman of the Year on Tuesday.

Strausbaugh is an 5-foot, 8-inch outside hitter for Jacksonville University. She becomes the first player in JU program history to earn the honor. She was also named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team.

Strausbaugh led the Dolphins in kills (360) and service aces (34) in her first season. She also ranks second in digs (286) and fourth in blocks (44) and assists (22). Strausbaugh recorded double-digits kills in 19 contests, including more than 20 kills on four occasions. She finished the year with double-digit kills in eight of her final 10 matches. Strausbaugh also picked up A-Sun Player of the Week honors twice in the final three weeks of the regular season, including this past week, when she collected 50 kills, 29 digs and 12 aces.

"Sammie is deserving of this award," JU head coach Michelle Collier said on the school's website. "She has performed very consistently this season, and we know teams prepare to defend her every night we step on the court. It is not an easy role to play and she has done it in a very high level, always working hard, and doing everything she can to get better as a player and help her teammates. She's an example to be followed and I look forward to having her leadership as we continue to develop this program."

Strausbaugh will lead the Dolphins into the A-Sun Championship Tournament this week. The Dolphins enter the event as the No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 seed North Florida Thursday in Nashville at 8:30 p.m.
