Fire crews responded to an automatic fire alarm that went off at Giant grocery store in the South York Plaza on Pauline Drive on Thursday afternoon.

While they were investigating there was an odor of smoke coming from the line of cash registers, but there seemed to be no apparent cause for the odor, said York Township Fire Department Chief Brian Bastinelli.

Shoppers and store employees were evacuated for about half an hour at 1:15 p.m. while fire crews from York Township, Springettsbury Township and Yoe checked the store for a possible fire, said Bastinelli.

Since nothing could be found, the investigation was being passed on to the maintenance staff at Giant as a precaution, Bastinelli said.

The store reopened before 2 p.m.
