A man found dead on Interstate 83 in Springfield Township late last month hitched a ride on the back of a tractor-trailer less than two hours before his body was discovered.
Troopers found Michael Scott Ruppert, 24, of the 1400 block of Conewago Avenue in Newberry Township dead in the southbound lane of I-83 just north of the Loganville exit about 5:15 a.m. on Oct. 27, police had said.
After police released information about Ruppert's death, a truck driver contacted them, saying he had an encounter with a man at a Rutter's Farm Store just off the highway at Exit 22 in Manchester Township, said Trooper Adam Reed, state police spokesman.
The man, later identified as Ruppert, asked the truck driver for a ride but the driver rebuffed him and left the store about 3:30 a.m., Reed said.
Video: Troopers went to the store after receiving the information and viewed video surveillance tape that showed Ruppert climbing onto the back of the trailer.
"The guy was actually hanging onto the back of the trailer," Reed said.
Police were able to positively identify Ruppert as the man in the video, Reed said.
State police are trying to figure out how Ruppert got from Newberry Township to just north of the Loganville exit.
An autopsy determined Ruppert died of multiple injuries, the York County Coroner's Office had said. His death was ruled accidental.
Officials previously said Ruppert was likely struck by at least one vehicle.
"Our guys are trying to piece together exactly what happened," Reed said.
Police are hopeful that someone who may have seen something will come forward.
Anyone with information about the death of Ruppert is asked to call state police at 428-1011.
