An autopsy has confirmed a Newberry Township man found dead on Interstate 83 in Springfield Township on Saturday morning died from being run over.
Michael Scott Ruppert, 24, of the 1400 block of Conewago Avenue, was found dead about 5:15 a.m. in the southbound lane near the Loganville exit, state police have said.
An autopsy Wednesday at Allentown's Lehigh Valley Hospital determined Ruppert died of multiple injuries, according to York County Chief Deputy Coroner Claude Stabley, who has ruled the death an accident.
"We know he was run over," Stabley said.
It's likely Ruppert was struck by more than one vehicle, he said, "but we don't know positively."
State police continue to investigate.
The results of toxicology tests, which are standard in such cases, are still pending, he said.
"It's possible the driver or drivers may not have known they hit a human being in the dark," Stabley said. "I can't confirm it yet, but we're pretty sure we know how he got to where he was."
